About this poster
Seven laps from a fairytale. On 2 January 1967, at the first world championship Grand Prix held at Kyalami, near Johannesburg, John Love, a privateer from Rhodesia in an older four-cylinder car, drove the race of his life. When the leader pitted with brake trouble Love found himself in front, cheered on by a home crowd. Then, with seven laps to go, his tank ran short and he had to stop for fuel. Pedro Rodriguez swept past in his green 3-litre V12 Grand Prix car and won by 26.4 seconds, his first Grand Prix win. Love was second and John Surtees third.
On the sheet a green, a green and a white band run to the finish line in finishing order, numbers 4, 17 and 11, the winner far ahead. A hand-drawn, photorealistic front of the dark green winner with its white stripes sits in the corner, and the data row adds 80 laps of the 4.094 km circuit, 327.5 km at 156.3 km/h, and the 26.4 seconds that separated the winner from the hero of the day.
