About this poster
Seventy-two kilometres of mountain road per lap, through Sicilian villages, hairpins and olive groves. The Targa Florio, one of the oldest races in the world, ran on 3 May 1970 over eleven laps of the Madonie circuit, almost 800 km on public roads. One team brought a tiny, light 3-litre open prototype with a flat-8 engine, built for twisting roads where the big 5-litre cars struggled. Painted pale blue and orange, two of them finished first and second: Jo Siffert and Brian Redman won, Pedro Rodriguez and Leo Kinnunen were second, and Kinnunen set an all-time lap record of 33 minutes 36.0 seconds on the very last lap. Local hero Nino Vaccarella, with Ignazio Giunti, fought his big red V12 sports car to third.
The sheet shows the duel and the outsider in three bands, pale blue, pale blue and red, running to the finish line in finishing order, numbers 12, 40 and 6. In the corner a hand-drawn, photorealistic front of the dusty pale blue winner with its orange arrow, and along the bottom the race in numbers: 11 laps, 792 km, a 120.2 km/h average and that 33:36.0 record lap.
