About this poster
Three cars across the line together, and only one of them was allowed to win. With the race in hand and the first three places theirs, one American team ordered its cars to finish in formation for the cameras, and Ken Miles, who had led and was heading for a historic triple that season, lifted off to wait. The officials then ruled that the New Zealand crew of car number 2 had started further back on the grid, had covered more ground, and so had won. Miles was second in a race he had led, and Ronnie Bucknum and Dick Hutcherson brought the gold car home third, at 4 pm on 19 June 1966.
This sheet tells it the Swiss way: a big black LE MANS, a red 1966, and three bands in the real car colours, black, pale blue and gold, running up to the finish line in the order they were classified, each with its race number. In the corner a hand-drawn, photorealistic front of the black winner with its silver stripes, and along the bottom the race in numbers: 360 laps of the 13.461 km Circuit de la Sarthe, 4,843 km at 201.8 km/h, a 3:30.6 fastest lap, 55 starters and only 15 finishers.
