About this poster
Twenty-four hours of rain, seven cars classified, and a first overall win at last. The grid was packed with the fastest endurance prototypes ever seen at the Sarthe and a Hollywood crew was filming at the track, then the weather came: rain fell through much of the race, cars slid off one after another, and of 51 starters only seven were classified. Hans Herrmann and Richard Attwood kept their red and white number 23 out of trouble and won, the first overall victory for their German team, and Herrmann, who had promised his wife he would stop if he won, retired on the spot. Gerard Larrousse and Willi Kauhsen were second in the purple long-tail, number 3, and Rudi Lins and Helmut Marko third in the white number 27.
On the sheet a red, a purple and a white band run toward the finish line in finishing order, the shorter two showing how far behind they came home. The hand-drawn, photorealistic front of the winning car still carries the spatter of a wet night, and the data row gives the race in numbers: 343 laps, 4,608 km at 192.0 km/h, and a 3:21.05 fastest lap at 241.2 km/h.
