The saffron crocus flowers in autumn, and each bloom holds just three crimson threads, the stigmas, picked by hand and dried to make the most precious spice in the kitchen: it takes well over a hundred flowers for a single gram. The plate shows violet flowers with their red stigmas and golden anthers among fine grassy leaves, rising from a netted corm and its roots, with studies of the flower in section, the three-branched style, a stamen and the corm in section below.
An antique-style plate in the manner of a 19th-century hand-coloured botanical engraving, on a warm ivory ground with the Latin name set beneath. Violet and red on ivory: a refined piece for a kitchen, a dining room or above an open shelf.
Designed in Switzerland. Printed on premium matte 200 gsm paper, 20×25 to 50×70 cm, unframed or in a black, white, wood or dark wood frame.
